SilverLining Welcomes Congressionally-mandated Report on Climate Intervention
Friday, June 30, 2023 - The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy today released a landmark report on climate intervention. The report describes the research required to support scientific assessment of the potential to reduce near-term climate risks by increasing the reflection of sunlight from clouds and particles in the atmosphere, or Solar Radiation Modification (SRM). Produced as a result of bi-partisan direction from Congress and led by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the report reflects input from multiple federal agencies. SilverLining, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a safe near-term climate, welcomes this clear recognition of the need for research on options to reduce the catastrophic impacts of climate change.
Kelly Wanser, Executive Director of SilverLining issued the following statement:
“SilverLining welcomes this congressionally-mandated report on the urgent need for research and assessment of climate interventions. While climate interventions offer the potential to reduce global warming rapidly, they do not address all impacts of climate change. Evaluating them does not change U.S. and global imperatives or commitments for reducing emissions. The report is, however, acknowledgement from our national leadership that evaluating options for improving climate safety is now too important to ignore.
The U.S. provides the majority of the world’s climate data and science so the international significance of the country’s engagement is profound. Risks from near-term climate warming are shared by all of us, but pose the greatest threat to the world’s most vulnerable people. This official report, along with a recent call for scientific assessment by the European Union, sends a clear message to the nation and the world: it is critical to research and assess, in an open, rigorous and responsible way, climate interventions that have the potential to protect people and natural systems from the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. This is a tremendously important step in the right direction.”
SilverLining released a report earlier this year that complements the U.S. interagency report by providing a key component: estimates of required funding. While the Administration report describes the research required, the SilverLining report calls for a $13 Billion increase in funding for U.S. climate science over the next 5 years to support an ambitious effort to provide the information needed to evaluate options for improving climate safety.
