About Us

Our Mission

SilverLining’s mission is to promote safety for the world’s people and natural systems in the context of near-term (i.e. 30-50 year) Earth system safety and security. Our vision is a world that has sufficient information and options for all stakeholders to evaluate the potential for reflecting sunlight to reduce near-term Earth system risks and impacts and to participate in ensuring Earth system security.

To achieve this, we seek to advance equitable and effective governance in democratic institutions, with a focus on driving research to support robust scientific assessment and to reduce disparities in research and decision-making capacity for developing countries and vulnerable populations.

Our Principles

SilverLining operates on the basis of principles that embody our commitment to the belief that open research that informs evidence-based, equitable decision making processes is the most effective and just approach to addressing humanity's greatest challenges.

First, do no harm to the welfare of the Earth’s people and natural systems.

01

Promote international scientific, technical and political cooperation on near-term Earth-system risk and possible responses.

02

Prioritize underserviced drivers of uncertainty and inequity in near-term safety and security, including: the effects of aerosols on clouds and Earth systems; the evaluation of sunlight reflection; and critical gaps in Earth system basic research and observations.

03

Promote science-based assessment, governance, and decision-making on near-term Earth system risk and possible solutions in democratic institutions, international multilateral frameworks and public science bodies.

04

Promote open science and data and the democratization of access to funding and tools for local and regional evaluation of near-term Earth system risks and impacts by global stakeholders.
